The Roseau Rams grabbed a road win in Goodridge Tuesday night, defeating the Goodridge/Grygla Chargers 3-1. After the Chargers won a highly competitive first set, the Rams went on to win the next three. Led by powerful play from front row, Roseau was on the front foot for much of the match. However, Goodridge/Grygla was never out of it, constantly bringing the sets level and never let things get away from them. However, the Rams kept the Chargers at bay, and walked away from Goodridge with their sixth win in their last eight matches.
Like all the others, set one was highly competitive. However, it was Goodridge/Grygla that played out in front for much of the set. Although neither team was able to build a substantial lead throughout, playing with the lead became important, and it was the Chargers who held this advantage in set one. After taking a 7-6 lead the Chargers only relinquished the lead once the rest to the set. Led by Brianna Severts who finished the match with 35 assists, and Ellie Hruby who led the match with 19 kills, Goodridge/Grygla scored six of the last eight points to take set one 25-21.
The next three sets were all similar in nature, just reversed. It was Roseau that played with lead. Although the Chargers, constantly stayed in the picture and were able to bring sets level at multiple points, they were unable overtake the Rams. Roseau evened things up with a 25-22 set two win. Although it looked like Goodridge/Grygla might flip the script again in set three, Roseau found a way to overtake the Chargers at the middle point of the set, and put themselves up 2-1 with their largest set win of the match.
Maryn Byfuglien led the way offensively for the Rams with 14 kills and added a pair of blocks defensively. Byfuglien had a solid connection all night long with Audrey Hayden who ended with a match-leading 43 assists. However, multiple other Rams joined the party as well. Clara Baumgartner finished with 13 kills and Evy Thingvold ended the match with 11. Goodridge/Grygla put up a great fight defensively with four Chargers registering double-digit digs, including McKenna Parnow who finished with 30. Although once again, Goodridgel/Grygla was about to fight back in set four, and even take a late led, Roseau responded. The Rams finished the match on a 6-0 run to earn the road win.
Roseau head coach Becky Hayden’s message after going down 1-0 was to stick with it.
Hayden thought the big moments went the Rams’ way
She also credited Byfuglien and her skill set.
Heading into the rest of the week that features games against Barnesville, Lake of the Woods, and Detroit Lakes, Hayden wants to continue to see improvement in one specific key area.
The Rams move to 8-3 on the season and will next take the court Saturday. Meanwhile the Chargers fall to 3-2 on the year and they will be back in action at home when they faceoff against BGMR next Monday.
