Minnesota sees a decrease in opioid overdose deaths over the past three years

Minnesota is seeing a third straight year of declining opioid overdose deaths, according to new data from the Minnesota Department of Health.

The state recorded 671 opioid-involved deaths in 2025, down from a peak of 1,039 in 2022. Fentanyl-related deaths also fell six percent last year. But the overall number of drug overdose deaths rose three percent, driven by an increase in deaths involving stimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine.

The state has also launched a new alert system to help local and Tribal public health officials identify overdose spikes sooner and respond faster. For more information, visit the Minnesota Department of Health’s Drug Overdose Prevention website.
