WARROAD, Minn — As fall harvest continues across northwest Minnesota, farmers are being reminded to stay alert around powerlines while moving equipment in and out of fields.
Large combines, grain augers and other farm equipment can reach powerlines that may be difficult to see, creating a serious safety hazard. If farm equipment does come into contact with a powerline, the safest thing to do is stay inside the vehicle and call for help immediately.
Electricity is always looking for a way to get to the ground, and that can make getting out of a vehicle extremely dangerous. If you absolutely have to leave because of a fire or another immediate threat, experts say to be very careful and avoid touching the vehicle and the ground at the same time.
Farmers are reminded to call 911 and their local electric provider if a powerline is struck.
