WARROAD, Minn. — The Warroad City Council has approved adopting the state’s exemption for political signs placed within public rights of way.

City admin Kathy Lovelace told the council that the city generally controls the public right of way along city streets, including areas that can appear to be part of a private yard. State law provides an exemption for noncommercial political signs beginning 46 days before a primary election and continuing until 10 days after a general election.

Council members discussed whether the city should continue enforcing its right to remove signs from public rights of way or adopt the state exemption for political signs, and ultimately voted to adopt the state’s exemption. 

The city’s authority does not extend to signs along state and county roads. KQ92 and KRWB will continue to follow and provide updates on Warroad City Council meetings.
