Northwest Minnesota Arts Council Traveling Art Exhibit

Roseau, MINN. – The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council (NWMAC) sponsors an annual Traveling Art Exhibit, which visits northwest Minnesota communities throughout the year. This exhibit includes 14 original pieces of art by regional adult and student artists, chosen from works submitted for our annual juried exhibit. The exhibit is currently at the Roseau Public Library until September 23. Please stop by to see these works of art during library hours. Some of these pieces of art are for sale. Please reach out to the Arts Council with questions about the exhibit.

The traveling exhibit has moved across the state this summer starting in May in Red Lake Falls, then to Thief River Falls, and now in Roseau. It will be followed by stops in Hallock, Ada, Warren, and finishing in Fosston in Mid-March of 2026.

Warroad Town Hall Meeting 8-5-25

Warroad, MINN. – A Warroad Community Development quarterly meeting was held at the High School Theater last evening (Tue). Presenters included WCD Executive Director Sarah Carling, Mayor Tom Goldsmith, Cole Nelson, MNDOT project coordinator; council member Kevin Thompson and others.

The highlight of the evening was a tribute to former Mayor Bob Marvin, for his 30 years of service. After a powerpoint covering his years as mayor and a video filled with thank yous was shown he received a standing ovation at the end of the ceremony. Council member Thompson, who has served on the council for 27 years reflected on Mayor Marvin’s tenure.

Bob and his wife Loralee were both presented with plaques recognizing their commitment and service to the community.

Carling addressed those in attendance and shared a number of topics. One that she is particularly excited about is a new Warroad Website.

The current Mayor addressed those in attendance highlighting the Regional Park and Marina progress and financing.

Cole Nelson was asked about the progress of construction projects in Warroad.

Nelson said he has received both positive and negative comments about the new round about.

Roseau City Council 8-4-25

Roseau, MINN. – Roseau City Council met in regular session Monday at Roseau City Hall in the Roseau Public Library. Councilmembers talked at length about a number of topics, but the longest discussion was about the Roseau Youth Hockey Renewal Agreement. KQ92 and KRWB spoke with Mayor Dan Fabian about the Youth Hockey Agreement discussion and what the plan will be for the council moving forward.

We also asked Fabian about the disagreement between council members on the 1 or 2 year renewal and how the council decided on a 2 year renewal.

Construction on Highway 11 is a big summer topic in Warroad and Roseau. Fabian provided an update on construction and what a timeline looks like for completion.

MN DHS on HSS Program

Minnesota Department of Human Services Press Release | August 5, 2025

Minnesota – Minnesota’s Department of Human Services is taking swift and dramatic action to shut down a key housing program, and it could have serious consequences for rural Minnesotans, including those in Roseau and Lake of the Woods counties.

On Friday, July 31st, Minnesota DHS announced it is seeking federal approval to immediately terminate the Housing Stabilization Services program, which helps people on Medicaid find and keep stable housing. That includes people living with disabilities, mental illness, or those at risk of homelessness.

Temporary DHS Commissioner Shireen Gandhi said the program lacks sufficient guardrails to prevent fraud and that millions in taxpayer dollars may have been misused by providers who weren’t actually delivering care. So far, DHS has halted payments to 77 providers across the state due to credible allegations of fraud.

While the state says it plans to redesign and relaunch the benefit, this leaves many Minnesotans, particularly in smaller counties, in a tough spot. For residents in Roseau and Lake of the Woods Counties, where housing options and support services are already limited, the loss of this program could mean longer waitlists, less assistance, and increased housing instability for those who depend on these supports.

DHS says it’s notifying both providers and recipients, and will continue monitoring any services still operating during the shutdown process.

Local agencies are urging those impacted to reach out to their case managers or county human services offices to understand what options may still be available.

4-H Recap from Roseau County Fair
