Warroad City Council 9-8-25

Warroad, Minn – Warroad City Council met in regular session Monday. Councilmembers talked at length about another construction project that will be happening eventually in Warroad. KQ92/KRWB spoke with Warroad Mayor Tom Goldsmith on the construction plan for Elk Street.

The council also had a good discussion about the possibility of Warroad becoming a quiet zone for trains. Mayor Goldsmith also gave us the latest on that discussion.

Workers Kick Off Union to Join SEIU

University of Minnesota workers across its five main campuses in Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester, and the Twin Cities, kick off their union push to join SEIU Local 284. This comes just days after fourteen hundred U workers, represented by Teamsters Local 320, rejected the school’s last, best, and final offer.

284 Executive Director Kelly Gibbons says four main units are working to unionize for expanding workplace democracy, promoting career security, working in healthy settings, and closing the salary gap.

Democratic Senator Omar Fateh, who works at the U, signed a union card and says he will help bargain for the unit. The four departments involved include IT, Marketing and Communications, Student Services, and Grants and Contracts.

Region 2 Arts Council to Award $5,000 Fellowship Supporting Anishinaabe Artists and Culture Bearers

The Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Fellowship will provide unfettered funding for one artist, culture bearer or creative individual, who is an enrolled tribal member or descendant, to fuel their creative and/or cultural work in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Mahnomen, Lake of the Woods, Becker, Cass, Itasca, and Roseau counties in Minnesota. Only one $5,000 award will be granted.

The goal of the annual Region 2 Arts Council’s AAI Fellowship Program is to assist the region’s most talented indigenous artists, musicians, writers, culture bearers, filmmakers, dancers, theater artists, and crafts people in furthering and innovating their work by awarding substantial financial support to fund creative time and/or arts experiences that facilitate depth and advancement in their creative work. Veterans and Families Asked to Provide Feedback on County Services by Oct. 31

Veterans and surviving family members, who are residents of Lake of the Woods County, are being afforded the opportunity to participate in a survey now through the end of October. The survey will potentially help determine the level of services and quality of services provided by the County Veterans Service Office.

Once the results are compiled, the County Veterans Services Officer Accountability Committee will review the responses and make recommendations to better serve veterans.

The survey form can be found on the LOTW County Veteran Services Information Webpage. It is also available in the Northern Light Region newspaper. Additionally, forms are available at the Baudette American Legion Post, Baudette VFW Post, Lake of the Woods County Office, and the Brink Senior Center.

The deadline for submission is Oct. 31, 2025. The form can be submitted via email or hard copies should be dropped off at the Government Center Building. The results and recommendations are expected to be revealed during the Lake of the Woods County Commissioners meeting on Nov. 24, 2025.

Stewart Family GoFundMe Page Opens

A local GoFundMe page for Ted and Danielle Stewart of Roosevelt has been set up by local area first-responder Toneal Pederson to help the family that is facing a significant financial hardship after losing their eight year-old son, McGregor.

The youngster died as a result of a tragic accident that occurred on Sept. 4, 2025. The site indicates that over $10,000 has been raised thus far. If you desire to donate, go to the Stewart Family GoFundMe to support this local family in their time of need.

Roseau/Lake of the Woods ATV Fun Run held recently

The Roseau/Lake of the Woods Sportman’s Club hosted their annual ATV Fun Run this past weekend. Myles Hogenson gave us an idea of what happened that day.
