Housing Crisis on Minnesota’s Reservations

The housing crisis on Minnesota’s Native American reservations is often invisible, yet deeply entrenched.

According to a report from Wilder Research, although Native Americans make up just 2% of the state’s population, they represent a staggering 30% of homeless adults. Unlike the visible encampments in the Twin Cities, homelessness in northern Minnesota, often takes the form of couch hopping, where homeless individuals are seen moving between the homes of friends and relatives.

For shelter workers in Northern Minnesota regional hubs like Bemidji, which serves White Earth and two nearby reservations, the findings come as no surprise. They witness the homeless populations daily.

The report also highlights contributing factors such as substance abuse and mental health disorders, which not only increase vulnerability to homelessness but also create barriers to accessing shelter and securing stable housing.

Minnesota Ranks #2 for Kids’ Well-Being

Governor Tim Walz says Minnesota is the second-best state for children, according to a new SmileHub report.

The state ranks first in support systems for families, third in work-life balance, and top five for child well-being and life expectancy.

Governor Walz commented “This ranking reflects that commitment and encourages us to keep fighting for our littlest Minnesotans.

Walz credits investments in early learning, child care, and programs like Paid Family Leave and the Child Tax Credit. He says when Minnesota puts kids first, the whole state benefits.

UMN Biosecurity Tips as Bird Flu Continues to Spread

Highly pathogenic avian influenza continues to infiltrate poultry facilities despite ongoing improvements in biosecurity.

Dr. Abby Schuft with the University of Minnesota Extension says we’re beyond having clean boots and clothing when entering birds’ housing, and need to focus on other environmental concepts and factors contributing to the spread.

Schuft encourages poultry producers and bird owners to be very observant as migratory patterns increase and harvest advances.

There have been 17 cases of avian flu across eight Minnesota counties in the past several weeks.
