Roseau Residents to Get New Trash Carts

By Graham Scher – R & J Broadcasting | June 20, 2025

Roseau, MINN. – The Roseau Sanitation Department is excited to announce that it will be implementing new trash carts for garbage collection beginning this summer. The uniform city supplied carts will replace all private trash cans for the collection of city garbage. Each residence will be issued one new 95 gallon cart.

All garbage must be placed in the new cart for collection including breaking down boxes and other larger items to fit into the carts. No garbage that is outside of the cart will be picked up by city staff. Residents are reminded that certain recyclable items can be brought to the recycle bins located on the north side of the County Courthouse campus to reduce the amount of garbage collection.

The new carts are designed to be lifted by an automated hydraulic lifter on the garbage truck. This provides increased safety to our garbage truck operators. The city has approved a $3/month garbage rate increase to cover the cost of the new carts.

The Sanitation Department reminds residents that it is illegal to place trash generated outside of the city into city trash collection either in residential garbage collection or unauthorized dumping in any commercial dumpster. The placement of garbage generated from outside the city in city garbage is illegal and punishable with fines up to $300. Illegal trash dumping increases the costs of garbage collection for all city residents and curbing the practice will keep your garbage rates more affordable.

City of Roseau residents using these trash cans are reminded that these trash carts should be placed at the usual pick-up spot on their designated pick-up day, then brought back to the homeowner’s residence and out of the paths for traffic or walking after collection.

Detailed maps, and general information can be found on the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s website, DOT.state.mn.us R & J Broadcasting was able to catch up with Warroad Mayor Tom Goldsmith at Tuesday’s City Council meeting to discuss some of the construction, as well as the local Safe Harbor/Marina Project in Warroad.

When asked on how the City of Warroad was working with MNDOT, and what kind of communications could be expected from the city regarding this project, the mayor responded:

Moving on to the Marina project: the Warroad Safe Harbor Dredging Project began in 2024, and its first segment was completed in Mid-September according to VEIT, the contracting company hired to do the initial dredging work. A 1,500 foot long by 30 foot wide channel was created by dredging over 14,000 square cubic feet of clay, laying the groundwork for future development of a new Marina in Warroad.

When pressed about a timeline, Mayor Goldsmith had this to say:

Where can those who live in, or plan to visit Warroad, go to find more information about the Marina project?

Are there any foreseeable adjustments in the future due to this project that locals should be aware or prepared for?
