Warroad alum to MC the state robotics tournament

The Minnesota State robotics tournament will be held at Concordia University in St. Paul today and tomorrow. A former member of Warroad robotics (Team F.R.E.D) will be front and center during the two day event. Sydney Foy (Mosher) will will serve as MC and as the Game Announcer for the event and told KQ92/KRWB news how she got her start in that position.

She went on to talk about how the robotics program has affected her and how it affects the people that participate.

She talked about her experience with robotics when she was at Warroad High School and how she still stops by to see how Team F.R.E.D. is doing.

She also extended an invitation to folks to watch the state robotics competition online

Again the Minnesota State robotics competition will be held today and tomorrow at Concordia University in St. Paul.

Farmers Union makes donation to local non-profit

Recently Farmer’s Union Oil in Warroad made a large donation to a local non-profit. Marques Stricker, Chief Executive Officer of Farmer’s Union Oil Company in Warroad talked with KQ92/KRWB news.

This is the second consecutive year that the cooperative has been gifted a matching grant through CHS Community Giving.

He went on to say that it’s the co-op way.

“Potential” state record sturgeon caught on Lake of the Woods

Over the weekend on Saturday, a “potential” state record catch-and-release lake sturgeon was caught on Lake of the Woods. Bryan Sathre was on the Lake of the Woods School news on Monday morning and talked about it

He went on to explain the process of verifying a record catch such as this.

The official Minnesota catch-and-releasse record for lake sturgeon in a fish caught on the St. Croix River near Bayport on February 9, 2019. Darren Troseth of Jordan, Minnesota caught the sturgeon, which is estimated to have weighed 120 pounds. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources certified the fish as a state record.

Real ID deadline approaching this week

People are scrambling across the U.S. to beat the deadline for applying for a Real ID. Not having one could pose some travel headaches after May 7th. KQ92 and the Northern Star 1410AM KRWB spoke with Lake of the Woods County deputy auditor Eric Tange at the DMV in Baudette and Roseau License Bureau owner Joedie Ziska and learned they both have seen an increased flow of traffic as the deadline draws near. Tange explains:

He clarified the difference between the Real ID vs the Enhanced ID card.

He was asked how long the processing would take for the new document.

He shared what documents are needed to obtain the Real ID.

There are other documents that can be used for travel in the event the individual does not have the Real ID.

Post office box addresses vs a physical address can pose a problem.

Another issue in the application process can be a name change.

The cost of the Real ID is $15.00. Questions can be referred to the DMV in Baudette at 218-634-2836 or Roseau at 218-463-1816.

Warroad Chamber of Commerce

The Warroad Chamber of Commerce had their Annual Meeting and Update on Wednesday night at the American Legion in Warroad. Chamber Board President Steve Hagen shares a summary of the evening talking with Jim Birkemeyer from KQ92/KRWB news

At last night’s meeting, there was an election of three board members. Elected to the board was Hendree Ernst from Neighbors Chevrolet. Re-elected were Kim Lawler from Marvin and Courtney Gallagher from Marvin Home Center. Other board members continuing their terms are Steve Hagen, John Davis from River Place, Staci Howell from Annie’s Trading Post and Kim Lawler from Marvin to make up the seven member board. Warroad City Administrator Kathy Lovelace also spoke to those in attendance with a city update and information on the Highway 11 & 313 improvements. Executive Director of the Warroad Community Development Sarah Carling spoke with Jim Birkemeyer from KQ92/KRWB news on the message she delivers to the Warroad community.

Vietnam Army vets visit

Yesterday marked the 50th Anniversary of the fall of Saigon. Three Vietnam Army veterans were guests on Community Conversation on Wednesday morning. Joining us in the studio were Arvid Janson, Wes Pederson and Doug Pomplun who recently returned from an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Each shared their experiences about the trip including visits to memorials, museums, Arlington National Cemetery and Changing of the Guard. Janson, who served in ’66-’67 reflected on the trip

Pederson who served ’69-’70 shared his thoughts.

He also contrasted his return from Vietnam to the states to the reception they received in Grand Forks.

Pomplun who served in ’68 was overwhelmed by the reception they had when returning to Grand Forks.

Roseau/Lake of the Woods Sportsman’s Club

With the rainy and windy weather from Monday behind us, sunshine and warmer temperatures are expected to be in place across the area. Members of the Roseau/Lake of the Woods Sportsman’s Club having been out in the Beltrami Island State Forest getting trails ready for the summer riding season. Myles Hogenson was on the Community Conversation program on Tuesday and told us what they look for in getting tis process complete.

He also talked about trail signage and how you can know where you at when riding.

He also mentioned some of the events that are coming up in May including a membership drive event in mid May.

Roseau County Historical Society update

The Roseau County Historical Society is going to be having their 98th Annual Meeting on Thursday May 1st at the Roseau City Center. Roseau County Historical Society Director Brit Dahl was the guest on Community Conversation on Monday morning and talked about the events that are planned for that night.

She also talked about a new feature that is coming to Roseau highlighting Roseau’s history.

She also went on to talk about how this project got started.

An area woman killed in auto accident identified

The woman from Karlstad that was killed in a two vehicle collision Thursday afternoon in Newfolden Township has been identified.  An updated Minnesota State Patrol reports that 79-year-old Corienne Jacobson died when the SUV she was driving south on Highway 59 at 12:48pm collided with a northbound semi driven by 64-year-old Robert Benson of Mahnomen.   Benson was not injured. Assisting the State Patrol with the accident response were the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Tri-County EMS and the Newfolden Fire Departmenet.

Roseau County Veteran’s Service Office update

From the recent MN/ND Honors Flight, which several area veterans were able to take part in, to other happenings at the Roseau County Veteran’s Service Office were the topic of discussion with Veteran’s Service Officer Marty Howes. Howes was the guest on “Community Conversation” on Friday and talked about the recent MN/ND Honors Flight, how it’s changed over the years and the application process to be considered for the flight. Currently there are 958 veterans on a waiting list to go on this flight. Howes commented that if a veteran wanted to sumbit an application it must be done so online and…
