Northland Community & Technical College will host a free Open House at its Warroad site on Tuesday, October 28th, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at the Advanced Resource Center for Innovation & Education (ARC) on Lake Street in downtown Warroad.

The event offers a welcoming opportunity for individuals at all stages of their educational journey to explore Northland’s broad range of academic and career-focused programs. Attendees will have the chance to meet instructors and support staff, tour hands-on learning spaces, and learn about financial aid, scholarships, and training options available through the college.

Roseau School District No. 682 has proposed to increase the school district’s general education revenue by $1000 per student. Voters will be asked to vote yes or no for the approval of new school district referendum revenue authorization. Last year, the referendum was turned down 61% to 39%.

Voters can vote in person at their respective precincts or early at the Roseau County Courthouse or by requesting an absentee ballot to be mailed to you.

In a little more than a month Roseau and Lake of the Woods County voters will be going to the polls in November to vote on special election school district questions on the ballot. Today we will cover Badger.

Badger School District 676 will be asking voters three questions. The first regarding approval of school building bonds not to exceed $5,400,000 for acquisition and betterment of school sites and facilities.

A second question deals with the approval of new school district referendum revenue authorization. The proposal is to increase the school district’s general education revenue by $429 per pupil subject to the annual rate of inflation.

The third question for Badger voters will be approval of school building bonds not to exceed $11,240,000 for acquisition and betterment of school sites and facilities. During last year’s election, these same three questions and the approval of new referendum revenue passed 54% to 46%. Questions two and three regarding approval of authorization of new referendum revenue and approval of school building bonds were turned down 55% to 45% and 60% to 40% respectively.

Voters can vote in person at their respective precincts or early at the Roseau County Courthouse or by requesting an absentee ballot to be mailed to you.

The Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers (AGLOW) announced at its annual meeting in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, last week that Lake of the Woods Tourism has been chosen to host the 2027 AGLOW Annual Conference.

AGLOW’s annual conference is the premier gathering for outdoor media professionals from across the nation. Each year, outdoor communicators connect with leaders from the fishing, hunting, shooting, and outdoor industries, along with conservation groups and destination representatives. This unique blend of professionals creates opportunities and collaborations that would otherwise not be possible.

As the host location, Lake of the Woods Tourism will once again showcase the world-class fishing, hunting, and outdoor recreation for which the area is famous.

“We are honored and excited to be chosen for the 2027 AGLOW conference,” said Joe Henry, Executive Director of Lake of the Woods Tourism. “The host facility for the conference will be Sportsman’s Lodge. Lake of the Woods Tourism has proudly hosted AGLOW twice before, in 2008 and 2017.”

Warroad Sharing Days is a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to help neighbors by donating fall and winter clothing, shoes and practical usable houseware items. Kim Lawler, chief organizer of the event explains:

The donation drive will occur Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 1st and 2nd.

Lawler explains the process of dropping off at the Warroad Community Center.

The free shopping will occur on Friday Oct. 3rd from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday Oct. 4th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is open to those who live or work in Roseau or Lake of the Woods Counties.

The Warroad Women of Today will also be holding the annual coat giveaway during the event. Coats can be dropped off early at the Threads in Warroad. Lawler emphasized that the only item that can be dropped off at the threads are coats.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community.

Roseau County, MINN. – A Warroad man pleaded guilty to third degree assault in a child neglect matter stemming from an incident occurring on or about May 16th of 2024. Jason Clifford Tappe, age 33, was sentenced on Monday in Roseau Dist. Court to 36 months stayed for felony child neglect. Tappe will be credited for 491 days served. He will also be required to serve five years of supervised probation.

The Roseau County Sheriff’s Office was notified in May 2024 that a 12-month-old female had been brought to Lifecare Medical Center Emergency Room in Roseau with multiple fractures. According to a probable cause statement given the clinical findings, concerns about physical abuse were raised.

Kaylie Star Krube, Tappe’s girlfriend at the time, was also implicated in the incident. She pleaded guilty to the child neglect charge brought in Roseau County Court on Oct. 30, 2024. Prior to her sentencing, she agreed to involuntary termination of her parental rights to her children and four future children in the child protection matter. She was sentenced on that date to three years of supervised probation with some additional conditions.

Warroad Mayor Tom Goldsmith will meet with Lake Township supervisors at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Lake Town Hall to discuss proposed railroad quiet zones.

The plan covers eight zones in Lake Township, Roseau County and the city of Warroad. If approved, Lake Township would be responsible for three crossings, Warroad for two and Roseau County for three.

Each crossing is estimated to cost $100,000. The proposal requires approval from all three governing bodies. Goldsmith previously met with county officials on the issue. KQ92 and KRWB will continue to follow and update on this story.

Autumn is right around the corner and that means it’s time for fall festivals. The Badger Fall Fest will be held Sept. 18th through 20th. Thursday the 18th you can enjoy the Border Bank Customer Appreciation Supper at the Badger Community Center.

Events continue Friday the 19th with Taco in a Bag meal, talent showcase at the Badger Hall and DJ at Skippy Fins Bar.

Be sure to take in the vendor show at the Badger Hall on Saturday the 20th, enjoy breakfast at the Badger Community Center, Veteran’s Park re-dedication, parade on main street, lunch at the Badger Fire Dept. after the parade.

You don’t want to miss the kid’s tractor pull, free bingo and Bush car races.

An important open house for the Lake of the Woods Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan will be held on Wednesday Sept. 24th from 5-7 p.m. at the Warroad RiverPlace located on State Ave. NW.

Highlights will include review of watershed implementation goals and priorities of the 2019 Lake of the Woods Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan, poster presentations of the accomplishments over the last six years and setting priorities for the next ten years. This is a great opportunity to provide feedback for the future.
